2023: Future Retrospectives

This symposium offers The Arts Council and artists an opportunity to engage with the arts community, the academic community, the media and the wider public in an imaginative way on the pivotal role that art plays in commemoration. Whether it is to bear witness to unheard testimonies, reflect experience, critically engage and question history, reframe the dominant narrative or offer imagined alternative histories, art must also question itself – moving forward to tell new stories in new ways.

The symposium is presented as a future retrospective, with 2016 as a key moment in a decade of centenaries. This frame affords artists, critical thinkers, and policy-makers the opportunity to reflect on 2016 with an imagined distance, and also offers the opportunity to imagine/question/interrogate the more contested centenaries ahead, and the Arts Council's Open Call Funding Programme, using the context of ART:2016 as a starting point.

ART:2016 was supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.
