2. Deadline for Kevin Kieran Architecture Award: 5:30pm, Thursday 9 December 2010

The Arts Council invites applications for the Kevin Kieran Architecture Award.  Named after the late Kevin Kieran, architect, distinguished academic and former consultant to the Arts Council,  this award, offered by the Arts Council in partnership with the Office of Public Works, aims to support the creative development of the architect and to direct funding towards architectural excellence and innovation.

The biennial award which is valued at €50,000 over a two-year period offers an emerging architect the opportunity to develop and deliver a research project in the first instance. Following completion of this, the architect will be contracted to design and run a building contract for the Office of Public Works (OPW).

Claire Doyle, Head of Architecture at the Arts Council said: ‘This Award is one of the Council’s most important supports to architects, providing a rare opportunity for architects to step outside the parameters of the business of architecture. It facilitates an architect to spend time concentrating on their own creative development and to input into a growing body of architectural research in Ireland. We are delighted to offer this award for the fifth time with our partner the OPW.’

Pat Cooney, State Architect and Principal Architect at the Office of Public works said: "OPW are delighted for the opportunity the Kevin Kieran award provides for the assimilation of innovative thinking and creative research into its building programme.  Dominic Stevens, winner of the award in 2005, has recently brought his unique understanding of the building in the landscape to a challenging project for a coast guard station on the west coast of Ireland."

The closing date for the Kevin Kieran Award is Thursday 9 December at 5.30pm.
