The Irish Chamber Orchestra oozes virtuosity with its team of extraordinary musicians, providing electrifying performances at home and abroad. Its February offering in Dublin and Limerick on the 13th and 14th respectively, features a roller coaster of kaleidoscopic sounds that traverse time.
Beethoven’s final work, his Gross Fuge is the legacy of the master, who having blazed a musical trail knew when to rest his pen and make way for generations to come. His Gross Fugue speaks so convincingly, transporting the listener to his world and is as fresh today as it was 300 years ago!
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 9, or Swiss, is associated with its yodelling-song quotes. It is a superb example of experimentation of textures, instruments, sounds and is the finest of his prodigious String Symphonies.
Korngold’s seldom heard Symphonic Serenade is more symphony than serenade. His \hHispost-war, post-Hollywood compositions drew from thematic material from his film scores and his Serenade ranks as one of his best works, composed towards the end of his life. The ICO brings this substantial work very much to life.
Widmann’s elgiac Aria is a short work focussing on tonal beauty. It featuring multiple, imaginery, voices that ascend to the dizzy heights before sinking into the depths of the lowest register.
Don’t miss two scintillating performances by Jörg Widmann and the Irish Chamber Orchestra in Voices from the Edge at Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin on Wednesday 13 February and on Thursday 14 February at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick. Tickets from www.irishchamberorchestra.com
