Writing for a Change: Flash Fiction Competition – Showcase Event
The Irish Writers Centre organised a Flash Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction competition themed around Climate Change in partnership with the National Botanic Gardens and the Five Lamps Arts Festival, and is delighted to announce a showcase event, where winners will read their work alongside commissioned writers Gavin Corbett, E. R. Murray and Orna Ní Choileáin.
Join us for an evening of readings by the four winners: two in the Irish language, one over 30 years of age and one under, and two in the English language, one over 30 and one under. This is a free event, but we would be very grateful if you could make a donation. Any donations will go towards making the Irish Writers Centre a greener and more sustainable organisation.

Submit to Novel Fair 2020
The Irish Writers Centre has launched Novel Fair 2020 and is now receiving applications to what will be the ninth year of this exciting competition.
Described by The Irish Times as a 'Dragon's Den for writers', the Novel Fair is an Irish Writers Centre initiative which aims to introduce up-and-coming writers to top publishers and literary agents, giving novelists the opportunity to bypass the slush pile, pitch their ideas and place their synopsis and sample chapters directly into the hands of publishers and agents.

The Best Banned in the Land - A Forum on Artistic Freedom of Expression
Brendan Behan said it best: the finest Irish writers were all banned sometime. From James Joyce to Edna O’Brien, none escaped the censors’ wrath. Join a host of artists and activists as we remember and examine the role of censorship.
The ordered removal of Maser’s Repeal the 8th mural has brought censorship to the fore once again. Is freedom of artistic expression being limited in Ireland? Are issues such as funding, promotion, social media restrictions and discrimination creating conditions for self-censorship? Join us at Project Arts Centre on Tues 30 April for this forum on artistic freedom of expression. Guests include Be Aware Theatre Company, Lian Bell, Donal Fallon, Declan Long, Una Mullally, and more to be announced. A light lunch will be provided.
This event is the result of collaboration between the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, the Irish Writers Centre, Poetry Ireland, the Writers’ Guild and Project Arts Centre. It is kindly sponsored by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.

Dublin One City One Book - The Country Girls – Panel Discussion
As part of One City One Book with Dublin UNESCO City of Literature and Dublin City Council, the Irish Writers Centre is hosting a free panel discussion with Colm Keegan and Professor Margaret Kelleher.
Join Colm Keegan and Professor Margaret Kelleher for what promises to be a very lively discussion between these two well-known personalities on the Dublin literary scene. The discussion will include topics such as how the working-class has traditionally been portrayed in writing; working-class writers and social issues; how writers portray class in their own work; the shift in attitudes towards class as displayed in current writing; and to what extent the urban/rural divide still exists. There will be plenty of time for Qs & As also.
