Given our current way of life, last week’s announcement from government about reopening is truly momentous and heralds the long awaited resumption of activity after an unprecedented cessation. The easing and lifting of restrictions is most welcome news and the return to activity for children and young people will be especially joyous and imbued with optimism. Of course, the unwinding of measures brings its own complexities. Guided by our public health advisors, we will continue our work with Fáilte Ireland and Theatre Forum and others to help us all chart a safe path to full reopening. The tilt back towards higher capacities brings particular pressure to bear on box office, marketing and production teams. There is much to consider and so many perspectives to hear and heed. We hope that our support will make these attendant pressures manageable and that you will find much energy and support from the reunion with your audience and with your colleagues. In the coming months, we will be casting aside some of the lexicon that we have come to know over the past extraordinary year and a half. But what will not be lost will be the remarkable wells of empathy and kindness that have been a signature of our lives in recent times. Like never before, the arts community has shown that it occupies a vital place in Irish society and that message will be central to all our discussions in the run up to this year’s budget. These next days will see many people in the thick of preparing their plans for Culture Night. We are grateful to so many artists and organisations for their imaginative approach to their programmes. We wish everyone a safe and smooth period of adjustment and we look forward to seeing you soon in a gallery or foyer or at a Culture Night event.
