Welcome to the February edition of our Newsletter

I am delighted to tell you that applications to join the Scoileanna Ildánacha/Creative Schools programme will open this month – this is exciting news for schools right across the country.

The Arts Council started Creative Schools as a pilot project two years ago, in partnership with the Department of Education & Skills and the Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, with the aim of putting the arts and creativity at the heart of children and young people’s lives. It is the flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme to enable the creative potential of every child, and we are already very proud of it.

Participating schools work with a Creative Associate to understand, develop and celebrate their engagement with the arts, empowering them to bring about real change in the way they work – with each school ensuring that children and young people themselves have a central role in this process.

Some 150 new schools will join the project this year. The window for applications by schools opens on 18 February and closes on Thursday 19 March, and you can find out how to apply in the Creative Schools section of this Newsletter.

Also this month, the Arts Council will hold an ‘open day’ in Dublin. We are inviting artists and practitioners, whether currently funded by us or not, to hear our plans for the year and meet the teams dedicated to each artform and area of arts practice. You can find out more about it in the article below, and perhaps book your place. We look forward to meeting you!

Best regards,

Orlaith McBride
