Vol 10 Issue 11

Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter

It is summer time, and this year we have the real thing. You can sense an almost physical unwinding as people enjoy the weather and enjoy themselves. A big part of that enjoyment is the arts. The alchemy of sunshine, entertainment and the arts from pure amusement to great intellectual and emotional experience are all part of a fabric made more distinctive and intense by artists and arts organisations.

As the summer rolls on we must begin to plan for autumn and a new funding year. This newsletter contains very important information about deadlines.

The Arts Council's application window for our main revenue grants programmes (i.e. for Regularly Funded Organisations, Annual Funding and Annual Programming Grants) will open on 10 September and close on 10 October. Please be aware that we will be unable to accept applications after 5.30pm on 10 October 2013.

The Council introduced this earlier application process last year, in the context of the severe difficulties being faced by arts organisations in planning programmes with reduced resources. We will again communicate the funding decisions at the beginning of January, giving organisations a full three months to plan their April 2014-March 2015 work.

Most people will be well aware that the challenges facing the public finances have not diminished in the last year, and that the Arts Council's grant-in-aid was further reduced in 2013 to €59.9 million.

We will continue to advocate strongly for increased investment in the arts in 2014. While working for the best, however, it would be imprudent not to consider also the possibility of yet another cut. Under such circumstances, the Arts Council will continue to adopt a strategic approach, investing to achieve the best arts outcomes, for now and for the future, with the resources available. We cannot guarantee any individual organisation that it will continue to receive funding, or that such funding will not be at a severely reduced level.

So this wonderful summer will end. We do not yet know what the next season will bring, but we are determined to prepare for it and to weather it.

Best wishes,

Orlaith McBride
Director
