The purpose of an Arts Council bursary is to support professional artists to develop their arts practice. The award is open to artists at all stages of their careers working in a wide range of art forms and arts practices.
Some of Ireland’s most talented and most promising writers, musicians, film-makers, visual artists and dancers received a Bursary from the Arts Council in 2011. A total of 152 individual artists from across the country received grants through the Council’s Bursary award. The Arts Council received over 770 applications across 2 funding rounds of the Bursary award over the course of the year, and awarded grants totalling €1.5m.
Recipients can receive up to a maximum of €15,000 per year through the Bursary award. A small number of multi-annual bursaries, which offer artists funding for up to a three-year period, are available each year.
Among those who received a Bursary award in 2011 were – Film maker Paul Rowley; dance artist Fearghus Ó Conchúir; writer Claire Kilroy; composer Ian Wilson; theatre director Tom Creed and visual artist Seamus Nolan.
Speaking about the Bursary award, Orlaith McBride, Director of the Arts Council, said: "Bursaries are like the R&D area of the arts. Bursaries allow artists to develop their thinking, to evolve ideas and hone their craft. This investment in the formative stages of the creative process is what underpins the quality of the art that is subsequently presented to and experienced by the public."

The deadline for the next round of Arts Council Bursary Awards is Thursday 19 January, 2012 at 5:30pm.
The window for making an application opened on Monday 19 December 2011.
